Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards Label Assessment Programme

The Label Assessment Programme is based on requirements of mandatory standards

• SLNS 1-1: 2016 Specification for Labelling of Commodities – Part 1: General Labelling Requirements,
• SLNS 1-2: 2018 Specification for Labelling of Commodities – Part 2: Pre-packaged Goods and
• SLNS 1-3: 2014 Specification for Labelling of Commodities – Part 3: Labelling of Prepackaged Foods .

To ensure full compliance with the labelling regulations the Compliance Department of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards offers an assessment service which examines your labels for accuracy and efficiency.

Review of labels for compliance & accuracy and identify non-compliant labels within 3 working days Provide a detailed assessment report identifying label non conformities Share expertise and provide technical assistance for labelling. Contact you by phone or email to discuss changes as soon as possible.

What we need from you?

A completed Application for Approval of Labels for your product(s) Application for Approval of Labels form. A sample of the product label should be submitted by fax, emailed as a scanned document or delivered in person. Possible results: Denied – too many things are wrong. Provisional – product is not yet on the market or approved as modified ” – your label has been approved, but you must make changes.

Approved 10 Common Labeling Mistakes

• Problems with ingredient statement
• Formulation/Processing procedure do not agree with claims
• Label is illegible
• Label is incomplete because all required features are not provided as required under SLNS 18: part 1, 2, and 3.
• Product standards not met (as it pertains to specific labelling requirements for certain product)
• Product name is incorrect (e.g. Pepper Sauce instead of Hot Sauce)
• Product Name font size incorrect
• Geographical Claim (example: “American Hot wings”, if not produced in America, you can’t call them “American”)
• Problem with nutritional facts label (Example: serving size incorrect)
• Undefined nutrient content claims (Example: Low Salt., Low Fat)
